Weekend in Guatemala City to see Harry Potter (11-26-10 & 11-27-10)
by Karen Dunn | December 7, 2010
We dropped Michele and Wojtek off at the airport and then checked into a hotel in Guatemala City - Barcelo. It is the old Marriott.
It was a bit of a culture shock. We felt like we left Guatemala and entered the US again.
We asked where we could see the new Harry Potter movie and they directed us to the Oakland Mall. This was even more of a shock.
We had lunch at a restaurant that had fish tanks all over. The food wasn't very good, but the fish were cool.
Then we went to see Harry Potter at Cinepolis. You can pay extra to see the movie VIP. I think this means you can order food during the movie. I'm not sure what the other differences are. We didn't spend the extra money.
They sell sweet popcorn as well as regular popcorn.
The night before, Justin woke up in the middle of the night with a stomach ache. He seemed okay in the morning, so we decided to still go to the city. During the movie, Justin decided his stomach didn't feel good. At this point, Nat put him on my lap. Not too long after, Justin was throwing up in my empty cup. Thank goodness I finished my drink. Nat on the other hand had a full cup of coffee. I was afraid my cup was going to overflow. It did not! Thank you, thank you!!! After that, Justin and I left the movie, cleaned up, returned and finished watching the movie.
After the movie, the boys rode on the two-story carousel. It was a very cool carousel. It had a teacup on it that Jared and Ryan got in. See picture. Justin and Nat are up top.
There was a North Face store, a Crocs booth in the middle of the mall, a huge Christmas tree, etc. It could have been any mall in the US.
Croc booth.
We ordered these yummy crepes and then ate them in the food court.
The food court even has a play area.
The next morning, we had a delicious breakfast at the hotel.
Then we all went for a swim. The hotel has a great pool and hot tub.
We packed up and headed to the Central Park in Guatemala City.
I loved the chickens on top of the van!
We didn't have much time in the city, before we had to get back to the hotel to checkout, so we grabbed a quick bite at Wendy's. It was the same as in the US, not very good.
We had dessert at the sports bar in the hotel, while we waited for our van to pick us up and take us back to Panajachel.
Our drive back to Panajachel.
A public pila (where they wash their clothes).
Other route to Pana
The bridge to Panajachel
Back in Panajachel. Waiting for me, while I ran into a store.
See the cakes.
Notice the little girl in front of her dad on the bike. You see this all the time on bikes and motorcycles.
