59. Getting to Caye Caulker, Belize (12-19-10)

by Karen Dunn | February 5, 2011

We woke up at 3:15 am to catch the 4:00 am airport shuttle for our 6:30 am flight.  The free shuttle leaves once every hour.

Waiting in the lobby of Hotel Barcelo in Guatemala City.

We arrived at the airport around 4:10am.  We could not find our flight anywhere.  I asked one woman where TAG airline (the Guatemalan airline) was and she didn't seem to know.  She told me to go to the far end of the airport near Mayan Island Air.  Still couldn't find our flight.  We saw one flight going to Flores (our connecting city) at 6:30am, the same time, but on TACA airline.  A guy in line was convincing us that this must be our flight.  I told Nat, I know we are not flying TACA.  So, he went and asked someone else about our flight.  He finally was told that we had to take a cab to the other side of the airport.

So 50Q later, we arrived at the TAG airline hanger.  I was not sure we were in the right place!  We knocked on the door that they taxi driver told us to go into.  We woke up the guard.  It was now around 4:35 am and we were in the right place.  The TAG staff didn't arrive until 5:15 am.  The boys didn't go back to sleep during any of this.

We boarded the plane about 6:30am.  Here is our plane.

We stopped in Flores, had to pay about $30+ each to leave the country and then we were off to Belize.  The plane we were on was so tiny!
Here is a picture of our tiny plane.

This is from the back of the plane.

 No storage anywhere.
The pilots let the kids play in the cockpit when we arrived.  This seems to becoming a regular occurrence.

We were picked up at the airport and transported to the water taxi station.  We had lunch while we waited or our water taxi.

When we arrived in Belize we were greeted by Alina from Island Magic Beach Resort (www.islandmagicbelize.com).  We settled in to the hotel, swam in the pool and then went to Roses for dinner.  At Roses, you choose the fish you want for dinner and they cook it right there in front of you.
