118. Trip to San Juan with Maya Traditions (2-25-11)

by Karen Dunn | March 30, 2011

Today, Marcelle from Maya Traditions took us to San Juan to visit some of their weavers.

Walking through San Juan.
Just off the boat.

One of the first things we saw as we got off the boat, was a white woman weaving.  Turns out she is living with one of the families that Maya Traditions recently started working with.

This family has a store connected to their house.  There were many beautiful things there.
 Walking through town.

  Nat and his big sister.
Painting of the aftermath of Hurricane Stan.

See the face in the mountain.

 First official stop.

 Second Stop:

Third stop:

This is the Guatemalan equivalent of tie-dye.  Below they tie string around the yarn in a certain pattern.

Then they put the yarn in a black dye first, I believe, and then put the yarn in different colors.

After the yarn is dyed how they want it, then the woman weave it to create something like this.  The amount of work this takes is amazing!

After we were finished with the demonstrations and shopping, we took the boat over to San Pedro to have lunch at Shanti, Shanti.

Cullen, Luke, and Lucy had had enough shopping and were exited to go get lunch and really excited to get to ride on top of the boat on the way to San Pedro (a short boat ride).
Shanti, Shanti has great inexpensive food, but the service is SO slow.
 Yummy lemonade with mint!
Boat ride back to Pana.  Nat's aunt Susie passing San Marcos, the town where a friend has adopted a child from.

That trip was the best! As usual your pictures are the best. I want some of your weaving pics, they are so much richer and alive than theones I took.
